Introducing The Event Gurus
Sisters Lori Abel and Maddee Kepes have combined our creative talents, management expertise and extensive event experience to serve our clients as The Event Gurus.
Years ago during a “mother-daughter” play group session, one of my friends mentioned that she was having a baby shower and needed decorations. She’d received quotes from several vendors and was surprised by the high cost. Out of nowhere I said, “I’ll do it.” I don’t know where the words came from as I had no experience creating art work in my life! My education had earned me an MBA in marketing and human resources and landed me in corporate sales. But I did the party and it was a huge success. The left side of my brain took over and the creativity simply flowed. Word of mouth passed quickly through the Detroit community, and before I knew it, I was in my own party planning and decoration business.
It’s been over 20 years since that first baby shower and I still have a passion for what I do. The business grew beyond my belief with the old-fashioned value of doing business on a handshake. My mission from the onset has been to offer my customers quality service at a lower price than my competition.
As my experience grew, I took on larger events such as bar/bat mitzvahs,, weddings and corporate functions. My customers have always been my inspiration. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with wonderful clients throughout the years, and many have remained friends long after their event.
Most recently, the business has expanded yet again and now includes my sister Maddee Kepes. When you meet Maddee you’ll see why we’re well matched to meet the needs of our customers.
After retiring from commercial banking to become a stay-at-home mom, I quickly recognized the need to find a new outlet for my goal-oriented nature. So I set out to become a writer, publishing first as a regular contributor to a national publication and later writing the play Mean Girls for JET’s school outreach. I also wrote newsletters, training materials and public relations articles for local clients.
But writing is a solitary endeavor and being a people-person at heart, I discovered a more satisfying investment of my time and energy in volunteering. Through my involvement at Hillel Day School, the Detroit Maccabi organization and Detroit Country Day School, I honed my ability to organize events, including fundraisers, auctions and galas. After chairing Country Day’s annual auction in 2000, I accepted a job there in the development department coordinating fundraising and related events.
Fast forward through life’s various twists and turns, including six years living in Arizona where I picked up tax preparation and bookkeeping experience, to my return to home and family in Michigan. I could not have timed my return better, because Lori was poised to expand her business. My creative talents, organization skills, financial planning know-how and love of helping people were just what Lori was looking for in a partner. And so The Event Gurus was born.
Shortly before moving back to Michigan, I cracked open a fortune cookie and read this message: The best is yet to come. Soon after I found myself meeting wonderful people, planning fabulous events, and helping others make special memories. Better yet, every day I get to work with my best friend, who just happens to be my sister Lori.
